Terms
For using XLWrite, as of 20 October 2026.
What XLWrite is
A writing and formatting application for people who publish their own books, made by Xandland. You write in it, and it produces the files a printer and an ebook shop need. These terms are between you and Xandland.
Your words are yours
Everything you write in XLWrite belongs to you. We claim no rights in it, we do not read it, and we do not use it for anything. The files it produces — the PDF, the ebook, the manuscript — are yours to publish, sell and do as you like with.
The free fortnight
A new account can use XLWrite free for fourteen days. You add a card to begin; it is not charged until the fifteenth day, and if you cancel before then it is never charged. During the fortnight you can write, bring a book in, try every design, and see your book at its real size. Making a print-ready PDF, an ebook file or a cover template ends the trial and starts your subscription that day. The fortnight is offered once to each account.
Subscribing
XLWrite costs $8 a month, or $10 a month together with XLScreenplay, or $12 a month with a website from XLSites as well. It renews monthly until you cancel, which you can do at any time from your account page. A cancelled subscription keeps working until the end of the month you have paid for. Payments are taken by Stripe.
One Xandland account signs you into every Xandland tool, but each tool is its own subscription. Paying for XLWrite does not open XLScreenplay, and the other way round.
If you stop paying
Nothing is taken from you. Every book stays on your computer, you can read it, you can change its design, and you can take the manuscript out as a Word file whenever you like. You cannot add new words or make a print PDF or ebook until you subscribe again.
Refunds
If you subscribed by mistake, or something was broken and we could not fix it, write to us within fourteen days of the payment and we will refund it.
Your books on our server
Books reach our server only when you sign in and ask for them to be carried between your machines. We will keep them safe and available to you for as long as you have an account. We may remove the server copy of books belonging to accounts that have been closed, or that have had no subscription and no sign-in for a year, after writing to the address on the account first. The copy on your own computer is never touched by us.
What we ask of you
- Keep your sign-in to yourself.
- Do not use XLWrite to produce something unlawful, or to copy somebody else’s book as your own.
- Do not try to break the service or get into other people’s accounts or books.
Being honest about what it is
XLWrite is made with care and it is tested against the real rules of the printers it supports. But a printer or a shop can change its rules, and a file can be refused for reasons we could not see. We do not promise that any particular printer will accept any particular file, and we are not responsible for the cost of a print run. Check your proof. Everybody should check their proof.
Beyond refunding what you have paid us, we are not liable for losses that come from using, or not being able to use, XLWrite.
Changes
If these terms change, the date at the top changes, and if a change affects what you pay or what you keep we will write to the address on your account before it takes effect.
